In reality, the difference isn’t that clean-cut. The job of architect and contractor can often overlap – both do in-depth research into building codes, permits, site visits, structural engineering analysis, and depending on the contractor, drawing up plans as well.

The main difference is that if you hire a contractor, specifically a General Contractor, before hiring an architect – your GC will take care of hiring the architect or their team of subcontractors will already include one.
